Female Merganser Reflections
This is the female hooded merganser (called goosander in Eurasia)- a species of fish-eating duck in the subfamily Anatinae. It is the only extant species in the genus Lophodytes. The genus name derives from the Greek language: lophos meaning 'crest', and dutes meaning 'diver'. The bird is striking in appearance and has a crest that they can raise or or lowered.
Our Spring-fed Midwest USA pond teems with abundant wildlife. Our camera records details from the other side of the pond- detail unseen by the naked eye. These animals are elusive & cautious. Our photographs take a lot of dedication and time.
